What to Know About Pride Month

Pride Month isn’t just about having fun—although no one will deny that it’s a blast.

It’s also about raising awareness for LGBTQ+ individuals. The month shines a light on the ongoing issues they face now and discrimination they faced in the past. 

After all, the catalyst for Pride was the 1969 Stonewall Riots, which were a multi-day response to the aggressive police raid of a gay club in New York City. The riots protested the raid along with other issues such as bars not being able to serve gay patrons alcohol and it being illegal for gay individuals to publicly show affection for one another.

To this day, LGBTQ+ individuals continue to use Pride Month as an opportunity for advocacy. If you’re an LGBTQ+ community member or an ally, you may consider donating to organizations such as Queer Detainee Empowerment Project, the National Center for Transgender Equality, the National Queer and Trans Therapists of Color Network, and The Trevor Project to show your support for the community. 

How Do People Celebrate Pride? 

Pride is for celebrating all of the advancements in LGBTQ+ equality. There’s no one way to celebrate Pride.

If you want to host a kickback with your friends and watch some movies with gay representation, go for it. If you want to wear a rainbow thong and dance on a parade float, that’s great too! 

It’s all about inclusivity, representation, and celebration! 

What Every Color in the Pride Flag Means 

Before you wear the rainbow, you should know what it means.

The Pride flag rainbow was designed by artist and activist Gilbert Baker in 1978. It was made to collectively represent the LGBTQ+ community. 

“We needed something to express our joy, our beauty, our power. And the rainbow did that,” Baker told CNN in 2015.

Below is the meaning of each color:

• Brown: Inclusivity 
• Red: Life
• Orange: Healing
• Yellow: Sunlight
• Green: Nature
• Blue: Harmony 
• Purple: Spirit
