Q&A with Velvet Kitten Lingerie Designer Wendy McMillian

aysunpijama: So, let's bring the newbies up to speed. What's Velvet Kitten all about?

Wendy McMillian: Velvet Kitten is the private brand of aysunpijama. It started about eight years ago. We started with mainly lingerie pieces, and, in the recent years, we have expanded into sleepwear, plus size, exotic pieces, and shapewear.

LD: What kind of woman is your lingerie created for?

WM: Velvet kitten wants to create a brand that all women feel comfortable wearing. From bodystockings to pajamas, almost any woman can find a Velvet Kitten piece that fits her personality.

LD: How did you get into lingerie design?

WM: My grandmother taught me to sew when I was very young, and I would make clothes for my Barbie dolls. I wanted to be a fashion designer from a very young age.

I graduated with an Apparel Design Degree from Iowa State University. I had a strong focus in bridal design, but quickly fell in love with lingerie design.

Bridal and lingerie are actually very similar in that they both use very feminine details and heavily reply on fabrics to create unique designs.

LD: What inspires you when you are designing?

WM: I love working with the fabrics first. Often, the fabric will inspire the final design.

It is also important to stay current with new fashion trends. Even new clothing trends can be translated into lingerie.

LD: Thoughts on lace? Is it overused or a forever-classic?

WM: Forever classic—lace is timeless. With all the new fabric techniques available, lace can look completely different and can be used in so many ways.

LD: What's something a lot of people don't realize about designing/creating lingerie?

WM: How important all the small details are and choosing the right fabrics for each style. Even the weight of the fabric can alter the end result of the design.

LD: That's fascinating!

To wrap it up, are there any celebrities you would you love to get your lingerie on? 

WM: We create a brand for the everyday woman—creating pieces that she can feel comfortable wearing and can afford.

A celebrity would be great, but, really, it's wonderful when any woman chooses our brand.

What can’t Ri-Ri do? The pop star recently launched her well-received beauty line, Fenty Beauty, in September 2017. Since then, she’s found yet another way to let her fans support her—with her lingerie line, Savage x Fenty. The collection’s website quotes Rihanna saying, “Women should be wearing lingerie for their damn selves… I want women to own their beauty.” We couldn’t agree more with this message!

2. Megan Fox

This brunette bombshell has captured fans for years with her blue eyes, dark hair, and seductive stare. After she was unceremoniously fired from Transformers, the actress decided to put on her entrepreneur hat and work with Frederick's of Hollywood as their brand ambassador and creative partner. 3. Heidi Klum

Heidi Klum is no stranger to sporting skimpy lingerie—after 13 years as a Victoria’s Secret Angel, the German-born supermodel-turned-businesswoman has had her fair share of lingerie looks. Unsurprisingly, her lingerie line also celebrates curvy women—she started it in 2013 with Addition Elle, and it ranks on the supportive side of sexy, just like plus-sized lingerie should be. 5. Paris Hilton

The hotel heiress and socialite is used to having the camera on her, and she’s not afraid to show some skin. Suffice it to say, Paris Hilton Lingerie takes care of the latter quite nicely. Bringing a whole new meaning to her viral catchphrase, “That’s hot,” Hilton teased some photos on Instagram of herself modeling the line in 2017. If all goes well, it’s only a matter of time until the public gets to try on Paris Hilton’s lingerie line for themselves. If you recall, after trying out The Simple Life, Hilton became quite the fashion mogul—launching Paris Hilton lines for everything from footwear to cosmetics to leggings.

6. Britney Spears

Talk about the ultimate comeback. Though our beloved Britney had an iffy few years, she’s back and better than ever with a hot mom bod and a singing career that’s experienced a renaissance. Before she started touring again, though, Spears launched Intimate Britney Spears, her lingerie collection, back in 2014. Though it seems to have fizzled out, there’s no shame in trying something new. Plus, you can always get your sexy lingerie fix here instead.

7. Carmen Electra

Who remembers this hottie? The Playboy model knows all about looking sultry while scantily clad, even while running in slow-motion in a red one-piece swimsuit on Baywatch as Pam Anderson’s replacement. All of her time in the limelight as one of the hottest female celebrities in America gave her some mint opportunities—she’s started a fragrance line and some leisure clothing lines, including a lingerie line. Known as With Love From Carmen, her lingerie line features comfortable pieces for all kinds of occasions, though erring on the classier side of sexy.

8. David Beckham

Guys look extra irresistible in lingerie too, you know. Though soccer star David Beckham may not make men’s lingerie, his line, David Beckham Bodywear for H&M, does feature a mostly nude Beckham in its advertisements, which is as much reason to buy the underwear as any. He launched the line in 2012 after his three-year contract with Armani, a time in which he realized there was “a real market for good-looking, well-made men’s bodywear.”

9. Dita Von Teese

With Von Teese in the name, you know this lingerie designer is going to be playful. Burlesque dancer Dita Von Teese teamed up with Bare Necessities to create unique lingerie looks that ooze retro sexiness and pin-up playfulness. The collection is a tad pricey, so if you want more bang for your buck, you might consider some of these darling bustiers instead. It’s all about how you accessorize if you want to make your lingerie look retro.

10. Naomi Campbell

Is anyone else noticing a trend here? Another celebrity decided to go from modeling the lingerie to designing it. British supermodel Naomi Campbell first got her start in the industry when she was the campaign face for brands such as Agent Provocateur and La Perla. From there, she got her first design gig with an Italian underwear label, Yamamay, in 2015. The special edition collection, #IAmNaomiCampbell, is no longer available.

11. Gisele Bündchen

One more Angel to complete the list. This Brazilian supermodel went from the runway to the design room with her first lingerie collection, Gisele Bündchen Brazilian Intimates, which she debuted in 2011. In 2014, she then launched Gisele Bündchen Intimates.
